The Willcox, re-created by David and Christie Garrett in 2000, is a gracious, traditional Southern hotel, its long porches and stately white pillars perfectly at home in the pretty antebellum town of Aiken, South Carolina, the "polo capital" of the South. The Willcox was built in the late 1800s for well-to-do Yankees seeking warmth, light and high society - for Aiken was the "winter colony" of the Gilded Age. Today the hotel has twelve spacious, lovely guest rooms and ten large private suites. Each one is quiet and sumptuous, with high ceilings, deep armchairs, big four-poster beds, lavish marble bathrooms, and wood burning fireplaces. The rooms spill over with sunlight, the windows hold views of Aiken's charming oak-lined streets or the piney Hitchcock Woods. The Willcox has a welcoming, sophisticated restaurant and an outdoor swimming pool; rocking chairs and pitchers of tea wait on the veranda. Close by are the golf courses of Augusta and the hunting and fishing paradise of Aiken County, the emerald green polo fields, and Aiken's many boutiques and cafes.
